Description

The RFI monitoring system was deployed to measure the first Radio Frequency Interference at potential Geodetic Observatory Infrastructure in Toro (GOIT), Center for Geodesy and Geodynamics which is the site location for the deployment of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). Several measurements were made with the objectives of establishing the RF interference for the location and to determine the frequency occupation on the 2-14GH frequency band. This is to ascertain unoccupied spectrum in the frequency band required for geodetic observations and Radio Astronomy.A huge data sets were measured from N—W,N-E,S-E,S-W directions at 830 and 1730hrs GMT with wide range capability of 13km-14km radius. The survey was carried out with VBW(300kHz),RBW(3MHZ),azimuth(0db) with vertical and horizontal polarisation on minimum, median, and maximum hold mode. Results of RF interference indicate signals to be within minimum threshold in the S-band between 2-27GHz and strong RF at KU-band between 10.7-12.7GHz along geostationary belt(40’ to 47’) originating from satellite communications,Vehicular movements and environmental noise. However, the 2-14GHz spectrum was found to be calm with most frequency allotted for geodetic and Radio Astronomy observations.Analysis of the results confirm the suitability of GOIT site for geodetic VLBI measurements and Astronomy using the S-band and K-band.
