Flying to Cape Town
Book flights to Cape Town International Airport (CPT). Depending on your departure city, compare direct services with connections through Johannesburg or another hub. Check current schedules, baggage allowances and connection requirements with your airline. Consider arriving on 14 February to settle in before the first symposium day.
Airport transfers to SAAO or your accommodation
Approximate airport-to-SAAO travel time: As a planning guide, allow around 20–30 minutes by car or taxi from Cape Town International Airport to the SAAO Observatory Road entrance. Travel time varies with traffic and may be longer during weekday peak periods. This allowance excludes immigration, baggage collection and waiting for your transfer. Check the live driving route below before departure.
Pre-book a transfer through your accommodation or a reputable operator, or use an authorised airport taxi or app-based ride. Airports Company South Africa lists Uber and Bolt among authorised operators. Follow the current airport signs and app instructions to the designated collection area, and confirm your driver and vehicle before boarding.
For a direct trip to the symposium, enter South African Astronomical Observatory, Observatory Road, Observatory, Cape Town. If travelling to your hotel first, use its full street address.

Daily travel to the symposium
Arrange a taxi, ride-hailing trip or shared transfer from your accommodation to the SAAO Observatory Road entrance. Check live journey times and allow for weekday traffic, campus entry and the walk to your meeting room. Agree the return pickup point with your driver.
Before using public transport, verify the current route, operating hours and final connection to SAAO with your accommodation or by emailing info@astro4dev.org. Do not assume a bus or train provides a direct campus connection. Ask for local advice before planning to walk, particularly after dark.
Driving and access needs
Parking will be made available at the venue for those using a vehicle. For wheelchair-accessible transfers, child seats or larger luggage, contact the transport provider ahead of time and confirm availability and cost.
