Observatory’s Lower Main Road has cafés, restaurants and independent shops. Riverlands in Observatory offers another nearby shopping and dining destination. Plan your route from the SAAO Observatory Road entrance and confirm opening hours before setting out.
The Cape Town Tourism guide to Observatory is a useful starting point for local cafés, shopping, arts and neighbourhood activities. Choose a venue to suit your dietary preferences and confirm halal, vegetarian, vegan or allergy requirements directly with the restaurant.
Check the symposium programme for included meals and breaks. Please indicate your dietary needs in the registration form so they can be taken into account for event catering.
Exploring from SAAO
The SAAO campus is a historic observatory site within the Two Rivers Urban Park. Ask the symposium team about any organised campus visits, and follow staff guidance on access to buildings and grounds. Public tours are separate bookings; see the SAAO Cape Town visitor page for current opportunities.
For time before or after the symposium, use Cape Town Tourism to plan wider city visits. Arrange transport from your accommodation or SAAO, check opening times and allow enough time to return for the programme. Any excursions advertised by third parties should be booked separately unless the symposium explicitly confirms their inclusion.
Accessibility and travelling with family
Contact info@astro4dev.org early to discuss step-free routes, accessible toilets, seating, quiet-space needs or other support at SAAO. Confirm room accessibility and transport arrangements separately with your accommodation and transfer provider.
If travelling with children, ask about family attendance and any childcare arrangements before booking. Confirm childcare availability, supervision, age limits, costs and booking requirements directly; the arrangements offered for the 2024 General Assembly should not be assumed to apply to OAD@15. Ask transfer providers in advance about child seats.
Responsible visits
Where practical, share journeys to SAAO, bring a reusable bottle, minimise waste and respect the campus’s historic buildings and natural surroundings. Use designated routes and follow staff instructions.
